Ba-amogaleng Crèche

Plans were in place to build a crèche on land allocated by the Alexandra Renewal Project. The estimated cost of this project was well in excess of R1,000,000, and of course the ongoing costs of running a facility such as the one we planned would have been substantial.

At the same time as we were negotiating with the Alexandra Renewal Project we discovered that there was an urgent need to provide a facility to the children from Nambuhle Hostel (they have absolutely no facilities for the 2-6 year olds at the Hostel). The committee at the Hostel managed to persuade the contractors busy with improvements at the Hostel to convert two empty garages into a facility for the kids. This was done.

We have now completed the construction work on the crèche located at Nambuhla Hostel. The crèche has the capacity to cater for about 40 children daily. Adjacent to the room where the children will receive their care, we have built a kitchen and behind, only accessible from the crèche, is a lawned playground for the children to exercise and play in. The playground is equipped with swings and climbing frames.

All the children attending the crèche will receive a meal every day. With the help of SONAE, our major sponsor, we are currently equipping the crèche and are planning to open during the month of March.

The crèche will have salaried employees who look after the children. The ongoing costs of running the crèche are in the region of R7500.00 per month (+-R100000 per annum.) The children are not necessarily orphans but all come from under privileged backgrounds.
